Investigation of encapsulation of pancreatic beta cells and curcumin within alginate microcapsules

Abstract Cell encapsulation is an ideal approach for the replacement of pancreatic function in Type 1 diabetes. Poor biocompatibility microcapsules generates inflammatory response implantation site and induces fibrosis infiltration, which causes microencapsulated cell death graft failure. To prevent inflammation after implantation, composite that exhibit anti‐inflammatory properties were designed. This study about encapsulating beta cells curcumin within 1.5% alginate by jet‐breaking regime syringe pump. The microcapsules’ size distribution rate solution characterized to find uniform particles. Micro‐size particles attained at a 25 mL/min. Uniform spherical (200–300 μm) created large amounts short period. Microcapsule breakage was less than 3% during 7 days, demonstrated stability method. Insulin secretion viability assays performed 1, 3, days microencapsulation glucose‐stimulated insulin (GSIS) 3‐[4,5‐dimethylthiazol‐2‐yl]‐2,5 diphenyl tetrazolium bromide (MTT) assays. No significant differences amount observed among free cells, microcapsules, curcumin‐alginate ( p > 0.05). Therefore, membrane did not show any harmful impacts on survival cells.
